Agnes Irene Brown Vahle, age 98, of Quincy, died on Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Good Samaritan Home.

Agnes was born on December 5, 1924 in New Cambria, Missouri, the daughter of Solomon and Lillie Mae Dowell Thomas.

She graduated high school in 1942, and married Harold D. Brown on June 15, 1944 in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1976. She married Raymond Vahle on July 23, 1978 at Vermont Street United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on September 14, 2010.

Agnes had a licensed day care, known as "Brownies", in her home at 2314 Jefferson for 24 years. She primarily watched principals and school teacher's children, which allowed her to have holidays and her summers free to spend with her five sons.

Agnes had served as P.T.A. president and received a life membership. She was a Cub Scout den mother at Adams School. She was a 60 year member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church, where she had served as president of the Methodist Women for a few years and served for four years on the Lamoine River district board. Agnes taught Sunday school and was a charter member of the Double Ring Sunday school class.

Agnes volunteered at the Tea Room at Blessing Hospital, and in the Ice Cream Parlor at Sunset Home. She served as president of the Q City Square Dance Club. At 77, Agnes tap danced at the Senior Golden Games Pageant. She also belonged to the outdoor club at the Y.W.C.A.

Agnes and Ray loved to travel all over our great country. They visited Canada, Alaska and Hawaii, and they took a Caribbean Cruise. Agnes loved dancing, camping, and hiking at Starved Rock State Park.

Agnes is survived by three sons, David (Shari) Brown, Rex Brown, and Randy (Dave Baker) Brown; two step-children, Barbara (Larry) Manning and Michael (Mary) Vahle; 13 grandchildren, Kimber (Travis Cobb) Brown, Ryan (Elizabeth) Brown, Josh Brown, Rebecca (Robbie) Roberts, Kara (Brian) Helm, Nathan Brown, Chris Brown, Emma Binion, Brian Manning, Jake (Jamie) Vahle, Tracy Vahle, Andrea (Al) Gonzales, Amanda Young; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Kevin and Chris Brown, three sisters, Winifred Thomas, Mary Jane Williams, and Geneva Sevier, and three brothers, Oliver, Howard and David Thomas.

Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.

Service: 10:00 am on Friday, January 27, 2023 at Vermont Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Kathy Crozier officiating.

Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
