Obituary

Warren K. Vahle, age 95, of Quincy, died peacefully with family present Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 8:16 pm in Blessing Hospital. He was a resident of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

Warren was born July 11, 1927 the son of George H. and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Brinkman Vahle. He attended Quincy Public Schools and Quincy College. Warren married Doris M. Schluckebier at Immanuel Lutheran Church, West Ely, MO on July 10, 1949. She preceded him in death on August 27, 2013.

Warren served in the US Navy during WWII, and was stationed in Shanghai, China, after the war. He worked as pattern maker until his retirement, making wood and metal patterns for industrial castings, and was a partner in Sass Brothers Pattern, Inc., and Quincy Pattern Co.

He is survived by his three sons: Chet (Barbara) Vahle, of Quincy, Michael (Jean) Vahle, of Franklin, NC, and Kirk Vahle, of Taylor, MO; seven grandchildren, Michael Vahle (Emily) of Cumming, GA, Kristen (Vahle) Buerstatte (Craig) of Washington, DC, Mark Vahle (Nerissa) of Florence, SC, Kari (Vahle) Adams (Mark) of Annandale, VA, Maury (Vahle) Schmitt (Aaron) of Destin, FL, Jacob Vahle (Anne) of Quincy, IL, and Rev. Joshua Vahle (Julie) of Quincy, IL; 15 great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Cooper, and Ann Camille Vahle, Teddy Buerstatte, Jack and Anna Kate Vahle, Luke, Elaina, and Caleb Adams, Hudson, Madelyn and Bennett Vahle, Samuel, Adelaide and Jerram Vahle; a sister, Georgene (Vahle) Sandheinrich of Sandy, UT; and his brother-in-law and friend, Kenneth Schluckebier, of Palmyra, MO.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Ryan Vahle, and a daughter in law, Sharon Vahle.

Warren was a member and past Elder of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church from his marriage until his death, a long-time member of the Quincy Ducks Unlimited Committee, a life-long member of South Side Boat Club, a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, member of The American Legion, and past president of the Quincy Local Office of the Pattern Makers League of North America.

Warren and Doris loved to fish, and traveled extensively during their marriage, to Canada and most states including Alaska, with numerous steamboat trips on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Warren was also an avid hunter and shooter, and regularly shot sporting clays and skeet, scoring 50 straight at skeet when he was 88. He loved spending his time hunting, fishing and puttering at his camp and his farm, where he, family and friends had built cabins. A skilled woodworker as a result of his being a pattern maker, he built the molds for the Sturhahn Jewelers clock, and in later years enjoyed making hidden drawer bandsaw boxes as well as toy wooden cars that he distributed to his great-grandchildren, day care centers and other children he met by chance. He truly enjoyed the innocence and laughter of small children.
