Marian Janet Maxwell
December 19, 1924 - September 27, 2021
Our beloved Mother and Wife, Marian Janet Maxwell, of Quincy passed quietly September 27, 2021 with her husband John by her side.
Marian was born December 19, 1924 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Raymond C. and Mildred O. Dagitz Loos, a well-known Quincy family. She was the second of four children. She married John E. Maxwell on June 9, 1946 in Luther Memorial Church. He survives.
She graduated from Quincy High School in the Class of 1943, then attended and graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing. Marian served as a Cadet Nurse at Hines Military Hospital in Chicago. During her early married life, she worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital while her husband was overseas in the U.S. Navy. She continued her nursing career as head nurse of the cardiac floor at Balboa Hospital in San Diego, CA, while her husband was stationed near there. She moved back to Quincy in 1948, resumed her nursing career, and has lived here ever since.
Marian was an active, life-long member of Salem Church. She was also a past President of Jackson School PTA and held offices in Chapter FH of the P.E.O Sisterhood. Later, after working as nurse, she and her husband, sole owners of Maxwell Photography, then partnered in the Maxwell-Bellis Photography business. They rented boarding rooms in their home to Gem City College students for over 20 years. Marian fondly remembered every college girl and was overjoyed when they would occasionally meet up again.
After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling overseas and around the USA in their motor home. Marian visited every state in the US except Alaska. She volunteered 25 years at Blessing Hospital and received a 25 year certificate. She was also an active member in many Quincy organizations.
In her final years, despite failing health and the Covid pandemic, Marian was an example for all of us. She maintained an unfailingly positive attitude, looked forward to each and every day and continued to show care and concern for her many family and friends. She was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her. Her's was a full life, well lived.
In addition to her husband John, Marian is survived by three daughters, Karen (David) Whiting of Mashpee, MA, Mary Jo Hanna of Evansville, IN, and Joneen (Dale) Sargent of Bristol, TN; four grandchildren, Tylor and Alex Hanna, Millie Hines, and Maxwell Sargent; 6 great-grandchildren. Her beloved sister, Melba Loos of Quincy; a sister-in-law, Ruth Davis of O'Fallon, IL; and a very special person, Dan Walker, of Clearwater, FL.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Marjorie Gabriel and husband Paul; a brother, Robert C. Loos and wife Carol.
