Dale Richard Hendricks Sr., age 96, of Quincy, died on Friday, March 19, 2021, at 2:35 pm in Blessing Hospital.
Dale was born September 1, 1924 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Charles Omar and Bertha Bernice North Hendricks. Dale grew up across the street from the love of his life and was married to Mary Madeline Wartick on September 28, 1946 in San Francisco, California. They were planning for their 75th anniversary in 2021.
Dale attended grade school at Gentry School, a one room school in the north bottoms before attending Quincy High School. He joined the CCC's at 16 years old an then worked on a river cruise at 17. Dale went to New Orleans, Louisiana when he was 18 to enlist in the Untied States Navy on December 17, 1941, ten days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during World War II until his discharge on July 9, 1947. Dale returned to Quincy and was employed at Gardner Denver. Dale then returned to San Francisco and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad until he was recalled to the Navy in October 1950 for the Korean Conflict.
In 1952, Dale enlisted in the United States Air Force until his retirement as a Technical Sergeant on May 31, 1965, having served his country for a total of 23 years. Military life took Dale to Canada, Puerto Rico and bases from Spokane, Washington to Orlando, Florida. Dale was a member of American Legion Post #37 in Quincy. Dale attended the third Great River Honor flight and served in the honor guard to meet the veterans returning from Washington D.C., and he only missed three honor flights in all those years.
Dale and Madeline were member of the Gem Dandies Square Dance Club for 30 years, and they danced from Alaska, Hawaii,and California to New Jersey and Florida. He was a long time member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ. Dale was a member of Plumber and Pipe Fitters Local 25. He helped build several power house, and Epcot Center for Disney World in Orlando, Florida, the terminal at Quincy Regional Airport, Padua Hall at Quincy University, and Quincy Medical Group. He also worked as a realtor on Leo Zanger's realty team.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Madeline, include two children, Michael Alan (Sandy) Hendricks of Cocoa, FL, and Patricia Ann (Steven) Braymen of Quincy, IL; four grandchildren, Shawn Alan (Susan) Hendricks of FL, Heather Lynn Tomlin of FL, Holly Marie Hendricks of FL, Adam David Braymen of Quincy; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Judy Veile of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dale Richard Hendricks, Jr., a granddaughter, Kristin Marie Hendricks, five brothers, Carl, Wilbert, Paul, Louis Raymond, and Russell Wayne, and a sister Iola.
Services: 2:00 pm Friday, March 26, 2021 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Matthew Hunt officiating. Please wear a mask if you plan to attend the service.
Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #37 and the United States Air Force Honors Detail.
