After you make it through the visitation and funeral service for a loved one, your family is still faced with many tasks to complete, including writing thank you notes.
You should send a thank you note to everyone who sent flowers, made memorial donations, brought food, or did other things to help you and your family.
From a funeral etiquette point of view, you do not need to send thank you notes to someone for attending the visitation or funeral/memorial service, or for sending a card; however, you can acknowledge their presence in your thank you note for flowers, memorials, etc.
As you sit down to write thank you notes, you may feel like you don’t have the words to express what you want to say. If you have read my blogs What Should I Say? or Things NOT to say… , you will know that you don’t have to say anything deep or profound; just keep it simple and from your heart.
I would always suggest that you write at least a brief note, even if your thank you notes have a printed saying or acknowledgement in them. It makes for a more personalized and meaningful note. You can also write more if there is a personal connection or story that was shared and you want to acknowledge that in the note. Do what is in your comfort zone.
Below are some ideas to help you see how simple your note can be and you can go from there.
Thank you for your support of our family as we grieve the loss of our mother.
Thank you for the memorial donation to the Alzhiemer’s Association in honor of grandpa Ben. Your tribute to our grandpa is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your friendship and presence at our time of need. It was truly a comfort to our family.
The vase of white lilies you sent was a beautiful tribute to our loving mother.
Thank you for the donation in honor of dad. Your support and friendship has been a comfort to me during this difficult time.
The Hansen-Spear Difference
One way that we help reduce the burden on the families we serve is to make detailed lists of all the flowers and memorial donations that are received. This gives the family an easy to follow list of people that need to be thanked for these tributes.
We also deliver the memorial donations to the organization(s) they were given to so the family is not left with yet another task to complete while they grieve.
