Phillip E. Summers, age 73, of Quincy, died Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 8:57 am in his home.

Phillip SummersPhillip was born July 5, 1944 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Henry and Frances Mast Summers. He married Julia Cherny on November 7, 1964 in Quincy. She survives.

He was a 1962 QHS graduate, and was employed by Moorman Mfg. until 1997 when ADM bought the company. He helped at Peters Heating and Air by working part time for them when needed, and farmed with his neighbor Matt Keller. He was a member of Adams County Old Thyme Association, and the Old Timer’s Club of Moormans. Phillip like gardening, crafting birdhouses and tinkering with old tractors. He loved watching his grandkids play sports.

Survivors in addition to his wife Julia Summers include twin daughters, Melinda (Bill) Peters of Camp Point, IL and Melissa (Joe) Nussbaum of Morris, IL; 3 grandchildren, Bryce and Trey Peters of Camp Point, IL, and Macy Hively of Springfield, IL; a brother, Dan (Nancy) Summers of Quincy, IL; three sisters, Barb (Dick) Schrader of Richmond, VA, Ann (Jack) Wingerter of Belleville, IL, and Lynn (Cliff) Greifer of Barrington, IL; and a brother-in-law, Fred Cherny of Hummelstown, PA.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew Matthew Summers and his parents-in-law, Mabel and Franz Cherny.

Services: 11:00 am Monday, July 17, 2017 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Henry Pratt officiating.

Burial: Greenmount Cemetery

Visitation: 9:00 am – 11:00 am, Monday July 17, 2017 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home

Memorials: Adams County Olde Thyme Association or American Heart Association

  1. Dear Julia and family: Please accept my deepest sympathy for you and your family. I just heard of Flip’s passing this morning from my sister Danya Badamo Wheeler. Lots of great memories from the old days at the farm. So sorry for your loss. I will say prayers for you and your family. God Bless, and God Speed Flip.

  2. I am saddened and sorry too learn of Phil’s passing. We attended Hickory Grove School together 1950 thru 1954. Enjoyed our youth, playing in the Summer’s barn, will never forget Phil….!! Best to his family…..
