Eleanor (Ellie) Jeanne Hansen age 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 6, 2017. Ellie was born on February 19, 1928 to Fred and Olga Wild in Van Wert, Ohio. On July 29, 1950 Ellie married Robert Hansen, Sr, her best friend, and they had 65 wonderful years together. He preceded her in death on February 20, 2016.
Their union was blessed with three children. Peggy (Kirk) Gerstacker and Robert (Kathy) Hansen of Midland and Jane (Rev. Jeffrey) Draeger of Romeo, MI. They have seven grandchildren; Christine (Kyle) Suhan of Lake Worth, FL, Matt (Courtney) Hansen of Rochester, MI, Sara (Shane) Bennett, Amy (Jimmy) Parsons, Amber Gerstacker all of Midland, Rachel Draeger of Arvada, CO and Katie Draeger of Holland, MI. They have four great grandchildren, Malekai, Rylen and Austin Suhan, and Karli Bennett.
Ellie graduated from Valparaiso University in 1950. She worked in the Iowa State Alumni office while Bob was in graduate school and at the Army Chemical Center while he was in the service. She was a homemaker in the following years. She was an active member of Valparaiso University Guild for many years as well as a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Midland. She helped in the preschool, taught Sunday School, and was trained in evangelism and Stephen’s Ministry. She also organized the prayer chain and greeter program, was involved in telecare and hospital ministries and led several Bible classes through the years. After Bob’s retirement, they lived at their lake home in Gaylord, MI for 9 years before returning to Midland. Ellie was involved in Hospice while in Gaylord.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 10, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 505 E. Carpenter Street, with Pastor Josh Parsons officiating. Ellie’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler Street on Wednesday, from 4-7 p.m., and at the church on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Graveside committal rites will take place at Midland Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider St. John’s Lutheran Church or King’s Daughters Home, where Ellie received loving and excellent care.
