Amelia Elizabeth Hall Bauner, age 99, a retired Quincy Public School teacher with a continuous service record of 44 years in the Quincy Public Schools, died Sunday (May 11, 2008) at 11:05 pm in the Good Samaritan Home.

Mrs. Bauner was born in Quincy, October 30, 1908, the daughter of Luella Payne and John Hezekiah Hall. Upon graduation from the Quincy Senior High School, Mrs. Bauner attended Western Illinois State Teachers' College for one year. Then she began her long teaching career in Pike County, where she taught for three years.

In the fall of 1930, Mrs. Bauner joined the Irving School Faculty asVideo Tribute the third grade teacher. In 1940 she was transferred to the Irving Kindergarten where she remained until 1966 when she became Quincy's first visiting teacher, serving Irving, Washington, Dewey, Jefferson, Jackson, and Highland-Riverside Schools until she retired in 1974.

Mrs. Bauner's professional training included bachelor and master's degrees from Western Illinois State University and two years of additional graduate work at the University of Colorado and the University of Illinois.

Mrs. Bauner was an active member of all professional educational organizations serving as a member in many different capacities. She was a member of the Quincy Education Association, the Illinois and National Education Associations, the Quincy Women's Teachers, the Council of Exceptional Children, the Adams County Retired Teachers, and the Irving School P.T.A. Her services to the Irving P.T.A. in which she served as officer and committee chairman were recognized with the presentation of a llifetime membership in the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers.

In 1944 Mrs. Bauner and her sister, Frances Hall, were Charter Members of the Quincy Federation of Teachers. Mrs. Bauner was the first married teacher who was able to continue working.

Mrs. Bauner was identified with many programs within the Quincy Public School System. She served on the advisory committee organized by Superintendent William G. Alberts and Dr. L.O. Little. She was a member of several curriculum development committees, serving as representative for the kindergarten area.

She joined the First Union Congregational Church in 1945 where she served as head of the Beginners' Department of the Sunday School, church historian, a member of the 15-40 Club, and as first presiding chairman of an evening section of the Women's Guild.

Mrs. Bauner held an Illinois Real Estate License since 1954, and with her late husband operated the Imperial Real Estate Service.

Mrs. Bauner's artistic talents were used many times in the construction of scenery and costumes for many school, church, and community organizations. Mrs. Bauner created the figures used in the Nativity Scenes in Washington Park years ago at Christmas time.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, a lifetime member of Good Samaritan Home, Women's City Club, Quincy Preserves, a member of Spring Lake Country Club for 50 years, and a past member of Quincy Country Club.

Mrs. Bauner married the late John C. Bauner on August 27, 1944 in Pittsfield, Illinois. Mr. Bauner died June 27, 1983. A step-son, John C. Bauner, Jr. died in 1957. Surviving are two step-daughters: Mrs. Eldon (Catherine) Elam of Lompoc, California and Dr. Ruth Bauner of Carbondale, Illinois; and four step-grandchildren.

A sister, Miss Frances Hall, a retired teacher of Quincy, died November 13, 1997, and a brother Walter J. Hall, owner of an advertising agency service died February 25, 1983.

Services: 9 am Friday at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Wentzel officiating. Burial will be in Samuel Taylor Cemetery, Rockport, IL. Transportation will be provided to and from the cemetery for those who wish to travel there.
