2008 in Chicago, Illinois.He was born on December 18, 1944 in Quincy, Illinois and attended grade school and junior high in Columbus, Illinois and Quincy, Illinois. He graduated from Quincy Senior H.S. in 1963, where he was a member of the basketball team. While a resident of Quincy, he became an avid golfer and worked at Cedar Crest Country Club and Quincy Country Club in golf course maintenance. Mr. Bersin attended college at Western Illinois University and transferred to Pennsylvania State University, where he received a degree in agronomy in 1966. Following completion of his education, he began his career as the assistant superintendent of Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois, the site of five U.S. major men's golf championships. Two years thereafter, he received a commission from a Chicago real estate developer to design a new golf course and country club to be built in suburban Chicago. During a period of two years, he then oversaw construction and development of Carriage Greens Country Club, located in Darien, Illinois. After its completion, he became the superintendent of this club, a position he held for over 30 years until his retirement. During his tenure, he continued to oversee a series of expansions and improvements to the golf course and club facilities. He was a member of the PGA of America, as well as numerous professional organizations of public and private golf course superintendents, designers, and managers in Illinois and America. He is survived by his beloved companion Marilyn J. Malanca of Willowbrook, Illinois, his sister Therese L. Cummings of Elgin, Illinois, and two brothers, Stanley S. Bersin of Mapleton, Illinois and Jeffrey C. Bersin of Los Angeles, California, as well as by one niece Paula Benanti of Springfield, Illinois and two nephews, Andrew Bersin of Aurora, Illinois and Christopher Bersin, of Carbondale, Illinois. Mr. Bersin was preceded in death by his parents Sylgar J. and Lorene F. Bersin of Quincy, Illinois. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Swigart officiating. Burial will be at Quincy Memorial Park.
