Paul Arthur Seifert, 86,
formerly of #1 Hawthorne Hill in Quincy, died Wednesday, Jan
9, 2008 at 9:05am in the Southlake Hospital, Bellevue,
Washington.
Paul was born August 5, 1921 in Quincy, the son of
Charles and Minnie Heidbreder Seifert. On Jan 12, 1952 he
married Doris Stapleton Wavering, and she preceded him in
death on Oct 19, 1991. He married Maxine Stroot Larson on
April 7, 2001. She survives.
Paul was a 1939 graduate of Quincy Senior High School and
graduated in 1941 from Rankin Trade School in St Louis, MO.
He attended Missouri University until he enlisted in the
Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a bombardier with
extensive navigation and radar training for night flying
combat with the Royal Air Force of England. In the American
8th Air Force he flew 21 night missions over Germany as lead
bombardier earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross and
three air medals.
After the war Paul continued his education at Missouri
University and then returned to Quincy to join his family
business, the State Street Store. Paul's father started the
State Street Store in 1917 and his grandfather Hermann
Heidbreder founded the State Street Bank, so his roots were
deep in the heart of Calftown.
Paul and his brother Richard Seifert along with
stockholders built the new State Street Store on Eighth
Street which opened in 1968. It is currently the location
for the Early Childhood and Family Center for the Quincy
Public Schools. He served as President of State Street Store
from 1965 to 1991, and also founded the Double SS Store and
the Stag Shop.
He was one of the founders of the State & 8th Business
Association and served as President of South Side Progress.
He also was founder of the Sheridan Swim Club, devoting many
years to its initial success and progress. He was a member
of the first founding Dogwood Festival committee and a
recipient of their distinguished Service Award naming him
Chairman of the First Festival. Paul served as a Board
member of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, Blessing Hospital
and was a Luther Memorial Church Council member. He founded
the "German Village Society" a planning organization to help
promote renovation of home exteriors unique to the early
German history in Quincy's south end.
Paul retired on October 15, 1991. During his retirement
years he continued to enjoy his zest for traveling in his
motor home throughout the Unites States, Canada and Mexico.
He is survived by his wife Maxine Seifert of Bellevue,
Washington, a sister Marion Benedetto, a son Dr. Steve
Seifert, three daughters Sandy Powell, Nel Filliger and
Donna Iams, a foster son Mike Craig, 13 grandchildren and 10
great grandchildren. He is also survived by 9 step children,
Lynn Lampe, Al Larson, John Larson, Susan Johnson, Eric
Larson, Joann Ischer, Kristine Klukas, Andy Larson and Carl
Larson, 20 step grandchildren and 2 step-great
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his
wife Doris, a daughter Susan Lynn Seifert and brother
Richard "Dick" Seifert.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 15, 2009 at
1:30 pm in the Luther Memorial Church with Rev. Leland Uden
officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00am to
1:30pm at the church. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
