On January 7, 2007 at 10:35 am in Blessing Hospital, Carl Robert Purdy went to be with Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior.

He was born July 8, 1929 to George W. and Lillie Mae Brooks Purdy in Bloomington, IL. He attended Bloomington Schools, left school to join the army, and later received his GED. Carl served his country from 1946-48 and was very proud of this service to his country. He was stationed in both Tokyo and Yokohama, and during his tenure there as a corpsman took the vitals of one of the most renowned war criminals of his time -ToJo (General Hideki ToJo). He mused about the fact that he shot ToJo before they hung him (with penicillin that is). Carl was honorably discharged in 1948 for reasons of family need.

Carl was baptized in the Baptist faith. Carl worked as a contractor in the Bloomington-Normal area all his life, until moving to Quincy in 1998, where he met his future wife, Nancy. March 14, 2002 was one of the happiest days of his life as it was the day that Nancy and he would be married.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, Evelyn, whom he loved very much, a daughter, a grandson and a stepdaughter. Carl is survived by his beloved wife Nancy, a son, William, four daughters Teresa, Pamela, Debra and Laura, 20 grandchildren, 3 stepgrandchildren and a stepdaughter.

Carl was very grateful to his country for taking care of him to the end and said that he got back a lot more than he ever gave. Even with the many health issues, Carl remained witty to the end, and living a simple life was his greatest joy.

Graveside services will be held Thursday morning at 11 am in Quincy Memorial Park conducted by Rev. Bob Cowman. Full military rites will be provided by American Legion Post #37. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 until 7pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorials in Carl's name to the Blinded Veterans Association would be greatly appreciated.

Send Condolences
