Jessie Wavering, of Good Samaritan Home, formerly of 218 Sycamore, died at the age of 93 at 8:52 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2007 in Good Samaritan Home.

Mrs. Wavering was born October 7, 1913, in Quincy, the daughter of Jesse F. and Anna Hauter Liebig. About 1900, Mrs. Wavering's grandfather founded J.P. Liebig & Son Ice, Coal & Wood Company, which was located at 3rd and Payson for many years. Her grandmother, Hannah Heitland Liebig, served biscuits to Abraham Lincoln when he was a guest in the Browning residence during the Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Mrs. Wavering attended Quincy High School being in the class of 1932. On August 7, 1951, she married Bernard F. Wavering of Quincy. He died August 6, 1968.

Mrs. Wavering had been employed by S.S. Kresge at 6th and Maine, Ben Franklin Store at 17th and Broadway, and as organist for the All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veterans' Home. After retiring, she enjoyed playing golf and traveling during the winter months throughout the South and Southwest.

Mrs. Wavering was a member of Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church; American Legion Auxiliary for 56 years, serving terms as president and co-chairman for Poppy Day; National Federation of Republican Women; Adams County Women's Republican Club; Adams County Chapter of American Red Cross; Good Samaritan Home Association; and S.S. Kresge Employees Club. She served as a Republican precinct election judge at Washington School for many years and volunteered for over 42 years at the Illinois Veterans' Home where she played piano and organ for residents and at special events. Mrs. Wavering also played the piano at Good Samaritan Home, both before and while she was a resident.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Dunham Wilkinson and her husband, Maurice, of Denton, Texas; a son, Gary Dunham and his wife, Linda, of Knoxville, Tennessee; a granddaughter, Leslie Dunham and her husband, Martin Camino, of Lawrence, Kansas; cousins, Richard Liebig and wife Peg, and Gayle Liebig, all of Quincy.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Bernice L. Liebig and Gladys R. Peters.

Services will be conducted Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Disseler officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Memorial contributions made in her name to the Quincy Branch of the Alzheimer's Association, Activities Fund of Illinois Veterans' Home, Good Samaritan Home Activities Fund, or to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
