Ethel "Fern" Hermsmeier, R.N., age 93,
of 418 Washington St., died Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 2:50 a.m. in Suset Home.
She was born May 5, 1913 in Shelbina, MO the daughter of Charles and Lutie Baynum
Bush. On February 1, 1935 she married Arthur Henry Hermsmeier in Quincy. He preceded her
in death on September 15, 2001.
She was raised on a farm near Shelbina, MO. Mrs. Hermsmeier was baptized at Shelbina
Christian Church and was a graduate of Shelbina High School and a 1934 graduate of
Blessing Hospital School of Nursing. She was a long time employee of St. Mary Hospital.
The Hermsmeiers retired to Mountain Home, Arkansas in 1973. In Mt. Home, she was a Baxter
County Hospital volunteer for 25 years, a member of Baxter County Hospital Auxillary and
worked for the Red Cross Blood Bank for many years. They attended the First United
Methodist Church of Mt. Home. They returned to Quincy in 2001 and became residents of
Sunset Home.
Survivors include, a son, Arthur H. Hermsmeier, Jr. and his wife, Bea, of Quincy, IL;
a daughter, Faye Exton and her husband, Larry, of Pontiac, IL; five grandchildren: Thomas
Exton and his wife, Holly, of Tolono, IL; Beth Pagel and her husband, Ron, of Appleton,
WI; Brent Hermsmeier and his wife, Jeanne, of Raymore, MO; Matthew Hermsmeier of Quincy;
and Andrew Hermsmeier of Grandview, MO; and eight great-grandchildren Sheila Exton,
Tolono, IL; Benjamin, Jacob and Rachel Pagel of Appleton, WI; Kayla and Taylor Hermsmeier,
Raymore, MO; and Colin and Devin Hermsmeier of Quincy. In addition to her husband she was
preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, 3 sisters and a granddaughter Kelle Ann
Hermsmeier.
Services will be Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. in Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the
Rev. Oliver Taube officiating. Visitation will be Monday morning from 10 a.m. until time
of services. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Memorials made to The Haven at Sunset
Home or the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association in her name would
be appreciated.
