James Bennett 'Ben Stewart

James Bennett "Ben" Stewart, age 80, of 2188 Wilmar Ct., died Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. in St. Vincent's Home.

He was born September 6, 1926 in Quincy the son of Harry and Catherine Wilson Stewart. On July 31, 1948 he married Mary Jane Johnson in Quincy. She survives.

Ben was a 1944 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines and New Guinea during WWII. While in the Navy he attended Purdue University and later attended Quincy College.

He joined WGEM in 1956, and retired as Vice President of Sales for Quincy Broadcasting. He joined KHQA as a sales consultant in 1996. He was very active and a former president of Quincy Sales and Marketing Executives, and was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. Ben was a member of the Church of St. Peter. He was active in many community organizations and fundraisers including chairing fund drives for the YMCA, United Way, Quincy University, Quincy Notre Dame and Quincy Catholic Charities.

He was an avid golfer with a single digit handicap for most of his life. He won many local tournaments. Ben was a member and former board member of the Quincy Country Club.

Survivors also include his children, James Bennett Stewart, Jr. of New York, NY; Jane Stewart Holden and her husband John of Frankfort, IN, and Michael S. Stewart and his wife Anna of New York, NY; 7 grandchildren, Lindsey Holden and her husband Greg Niemesh of Washington, DC; Laura Holden of Indianapolis, IN; Jack Holden of Frankfort, IN; Maggie Holden of Frankfort, IN; Aidan, Cassie and Blaine Stewart, all of New York. NY; several cousins including Robert L. Wilson and his wife Nancy of Quincy, and Robert Childs and his wife Frances of Carbondale, IL; a brother-in-law, J. B. Johnson and his wife Charlotte of Quincy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Jane Stewart Brown.

Services will be Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at 10:00 am in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 am in the Church of St. Peter with Father Dan Bergbower officiating. Visitation will be Monday, November 6th from 4-7 pm at the funeral home with a wake service at 6:45 pm. Private graveside services will be held in St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorials made to Quincy Catholic Charities, Quincy University, the Church of St. Peter or Quincy Notre Dame in his name would be appreciated.
