Wilma E. Bloss, 84, of 2196 East
Wilmar Drive passed away at the Good Samaritan Home on May 28, 2006 at 6:05 a.m.
She was born June 4, 1921 in Quincy to Frederick William and
Emma F. Heidbreder Meierkord. She was a life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church and
a graduate of St. James Elementary School. She was graduated from Quincy High in 1939 and
enrolled at Quincy College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in
1943. She did graduaate work at Western Illinois University in Reading Education.
She began her teaching career at Mendon High School. In 1944,
she went to Gardner-Denver where she helped Joe Bier build a personnel department. For
over thirty years, she taught English. Her work at Mt. Sterling High School, Brown County
High School, Quincy Junior High School, and Quincy Senior High School made her known to
many.
She married Fred G. Bloss on February 28th, 1947 at St. Francis.
He, too, was a life-long educator who preceded her in death on August 4, 2002.
After her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed genealogical
research. They attended several Elderhostels at Brigham Young University. In addition,
travel was an important part of their married life. This travel included two trips to
their ancestral homes in Herford and Muehlhausen Germany and a cruise to Alaska,
highlighted by a walk on a glacier. She was a retired senior volunteer, a placematter at
Good Samaritan Home, and a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
She is survived by two sons, Fred W. "Herr" Bloss of
Quincy and Jeffrey M. Bloss and his wife Diane of Springfield, IL; two cousins Paul
Wolfmeyer of Peoria and Eleanor Piepenbrink of Western Springs, IL; a brother-in-law
Robert F. Bloss and his wife Margaret of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, her parents, several aunts, uncles
and cousins, preceded her in death.
Services will be Saturday, June 3, 2006, 11 a.m. in St. James
Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marlin Rempfer officiating. Burial will be in
Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, June 2, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hansen-Spear
Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or Quincy Notre Dame High
School.
