| Penny Denise Lewis, 37, 4630 Collier,
Beaumont, Texas and formerly of Quincy died Wednesday, May 16, 2001 in Zion National Park,
Utah. She was born September 19, 1963 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Leo and Margaret Hickman Lewis. She was a 1982 graduate of Quincy High School. She attended Hill Junior College and graduated in 1987 from the University of Texas at Arlington where she played basketball, averaging 12.3 points and 7.4 rebounds her senior year. After graduation she became assistant coach at U.T.A. for three seasons before moving to University of Pacifica. She was then selected to be head varsity coach and volleyball coach at QU where she coached for four seasons. While at QU, she was selected as an assistant coach for the 1994 US Olympic Festival Team. She then moved to Division I level Lamar University as an assistant coach where she was currently coaching. She was a former director of Redmon-Lee Youth Center. She served on the Chaddock Board and Madonna House Board and was a volunteer with United Way and the YMCA. She also helped recruit teachers for the Quincy Board of Education and was a volunteer mentor for students. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Quincy and the Young Achievers Girls Club. She was currently a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas. Survivors include her mother, Margaret Lewis, Quincy; 6 brothers, Richard Hickman, Newark, DE; Alan Hickman, Quincy; Tracy Lewis, Canton, IL; Alfonzo Wires, Terra Haute, IN; Darrell Lewis, Minneapolis, MN; and Carlos Wires, Quincy, 2 sisters, Cheryl Amos, Minneapolis, MN; Pamela Mims, Oklahoma City, OK; her grandmother, Marjorie Marsh, Ft. Madison, IA; numerous aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her father, her brother Clifton Lewis and grandparents, Emma & James Hickman and Ben Lewis. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2pm in the Cathedral of Worship with Rev. Orville B. Jones, Rev. Kevin Jones, and Rev. Harold Davis officiating. Burial is in Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 7 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with a prayer service and sharing of memories at 7pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Young Achievers Girls Club, the Redmon- Lee Youth Center or to the Gym Shoe Fund. |
